Ilhéu das Rolas, São Tomé: the Centre of the World You Have to Visit

There are few places on the planet where you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere at the same time. Ilhéu das Rolas, a small volcanic islet south of São Tomé Island, is one of them: the Equator line runs right through it, which is why this destination is known as the "Centre of the World". But be warned: this is not an excursion to rush through — and in this guide we explain why, and how to organise the trip the right way.

A frank warning before you plan the trip

If you're 18 or 20, based in São Tomé city, and don't mind a day trip to the south of the island, yes, it's physically possible to visit Ilhéu das Rolas in a single day. But it's not recommended.

This is "leve leve" (take-it-easy) country, and a day trip means leaving before dawn and coming back after dark, all for a visit that deserves far more time and calm. Going to Ilhéu das Rolas is an unforgettable experience — and experiences like this shouldn't be rushed. If you're reading this article, it's precisely to help you plan the trip in advance and avoid that unnecessary exhaustion.

How far is Ilhéu das Rolas from São Tomé city?

Ilhéu das Rolas lies about 47 km in a straight line south of São Tomé city. The boat crossing itself, from Porto Alegre (at the southern tip of the main island), takes just 15 to 20 minutes.

But be careful: those kilometres don't translate directly into travel time. In good weather with no rain, the drive from the city to Porto Alegre — before you even board the boat — can take up to 4 hours, depending on road conditions. What's more, if you haven't yet explored the south of the island, it would be a real shame to rush through it: the scenery alone is worth an unhurried journey.

Road conditions

The road is in good condition as far as the town of Angolares. From there to the Ribeira Peixe area it's still reasonable. Beyond that, however, the surface deteriorates considerably, becoming genuinely dangerous on some stretches.

Once you reach Porto Alegre, if you stay put there, that's fine. But if you want to go a bit further — to Inhame Beach or Cabana Beach, for example — the route can damage the car or puncture tyres. One more reason why this trip can't, and shouldn't, be rushed.

Our recommendation: stay at least one night

Book one or two nights' accommodation in this area (in Porto Alegre or at Inhame Beach, for example). That way you can enjoy this excursion at a relaxed pace, taking in the scenery and natural landmarks of the region. After all, there are no museums, shopping centres or cafés here — you came for nature, right?

Turtles and whales: a privilege reserved for those who stay

Only by staying in the area will you have a real chance of seeing sea turtles — or whales — up close. The Tatô Programme, responsible for sea turtle conservation in São Tomé and Príncipe, partners with hotels in the southern area: when turtles come ashore near the hotel to nest, the team wakes guests to go and watch. There's no more authentic experience — just remember to bring your camera.

The Equator Monument

The Equator Monument is one of the highlights of this excursion. Standing there with a foot in each hemisphere is a privilege reserved for very few places in the world. Standing atop a volcanic island, right on the Equator line, some people say they feel a different kind of energy — a feeling worth experiencing for yourself.

The Ilhéu das Rolas community

The islet's community is small, and lives mainly from fishing and coconut harvesting — sold to Valúdo, a company that turns it into organic coconut oil, shampoo, soap and other products — as well as farming. Being there is an intimate moment, among warm people curious to hear the stories of those who've travelled so far. Sitting at a local bar and sharing a beer with them is, without doubt, the best gift you can offer.

Beaches of Ilhéu das Rolas

Ilhéu das Rolas is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in São Tomé and Príncipe: Praia dos Pescadores, Praia Café and the famous Praia Bateria — the latter reachable via a walk of around one hour.
