Honeymoon in São Tomé and Príncipe: the African Paradise Few Couples Have Discovered

Maldives. Zanzibar. Seychelles. Bali. Search "best honeymoon destinations" and it's always the same list — the same names, the same photos, the same inflated prices that come with being obvious. What if we told you there's an African archipelago with the same kind of beaches, the same warm sea and the same sense of a private paradise, but where you still won't run into a hundred other honeymooning couples? It's called São Tomé and Príncipe. And it's probably Africa's best-kept honeymoon secret.

Why You Haven't Heard of São Tomé and Príncipe Yet

It's not because it isn't worth it — it's because, for decades, this small country in the Gulf of Guinea has had almost no tourism visibility, so it rarely shows up on any list of the best honeymoon destinations. That's changing, but slowly, which is good news for anyone planning a honeymoon trip or simply a romantic getaway, off the beaten path: beaches that are still only yours, hotels with no waiting list, and an experience that still feels like a discovery — one of Africa's most unique honeymoon destinations, not a honeymoon package straight out of a catalogue.

São Tomé and Príncipe Maldives / Zanzibar / Seychelles
Tourist crowds Practically non-existent High in peak season
Average price for a luxury week for two From €2,800 Often above €4,000–5,000
Sense of exclusivity High — few couples per hotel Variable, often shared
Direct flight from Lisbon Yes (TAP, on Saturdays) Usually with stopovers
UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve Yes — Príncipe Island No, in most cases
What Makes This Destination Perfect for a Honeymoon Trip

A honeymoon in São Tomé and Príncipe isn't a generic beach week — it's a journey for two into one of the last truly wild corners of the planet:

Real privacy. No queues, no resorts with hundreds of rooms. Bom Bom Resort, on Príncipe Island, is a small, intimate retreat inside a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
Two islands, two atmospheres. São Tomé offers culture, historic plantations and the Cacao Route; Príncipe offers untouched rainforest, secret beaches only reachable on foot or by boat, and the absolute silence every newlywed couple is looking for.
Experiences for two you can't buy just anywhere: boat trips to hidden bays with snorkelling included, rainforest walks to unnamed beaches, turtles coming ashore (nesting season between September and April) and a candlelit dinner practically just for the two of you.
Direct flight from Lisbon, without the 20-hour ordeal other honeymoon destinations demand.
Where to Stay: Hotel Omali or Bom Bom Resort?

Most honeymoon itineraries combine both hotels, each with a different role:

Hotel Omali (São Tomé) — the arrival and departure hotel. More urban, comfortable, ideal for the first days of adjusting and for one last dip in the pool before heading home.

Bom Bom Resort (Príncipe Island) — the true romantic heart of the trip. An isolated luxury resort, surrounded by rainforest and beach, considered one of the most exceptional places to stay in the whole region. This is where most couples spend the central days of their honeymoon.

A Possible Itinerary: 9 Days for Two

A real example of how this honeymoon trip can be structured:

Days 1–2 — Overnight flight from Lisbon, arrival in São Tomé and check-in at Hotel Omali.
Day 3 — Domestic flight to Príncipe Island (35 minutes), arrival at Bom Bom Resort and a gentle first excursion: the Cacao Route.
Days 4–6 — Days on Príncipe: boat trip to Baía das Agulhas with diving and snorkelling, excursion to Santo António, a romantic rainforest walk to a secret beach.
Day 7 — Return to São Tomé, back to Hotel Omali.
Day 8 — A full free day, just for the two of you.
Day 9 — Overnight flight back to Lisbon.

How Much Does a Honeymoon in São Tomé and Príncipe Cost

Prices start at €2,800 per person for an all-inclusive honeymoon package — a genuinely affordable honeymoon compared to the Maldives or Seychelles — covering international flights, the domestic flight between islands, travel insurance, accommodation and breakfast at both hotels, transfers, a local guide and a 4x4 vehicle with driver. The local tourist tax is not included (€2.10 per person/night, paid directly at the hotels). Peak season (European summer and Christmas/New Year) carries a supplement on request.

Best Time for a Honeymoon in São Tomé and Príncipe

The dry season, between June and September, coincides with school holidays in Europe and with humpback whale watching season — a good combination for anyone getting married in summer and heading straight into their honeymoon. For those who'd rather spot turtles on the beach, the best time runs from September to April.
