Where to Stay in Sao Tome and Principe: Hotels, Plantations and Ecolodges

Choosing where to stay in Sao Tome and Principe is not about picking a hotel: it is about picking a road. Distances look small on the map, but the roads to the south and north are slow, and one night slept in the wrong place turns into two hours of driving repeated the next day.

This guide goes through the accommodation region by region — the city, the north, the south, the plantations and Principe Island — and explains, based on how we build our own tours, when each option is worth it and when it is not.

Choose the region first, the hotel second

Sao Tome island has four natural bases, and most trips combine two or three:

• Sao Tome city and around: where the most comfortable hotels and the airport are. A base for the city, the coffee route and half-day excursions.
• The north, beyond Neves: forest and black-sand beaches, ideal for hiking and for slowing down.
• The south: the finest beaches on the island and the gateway to Ilheu das Rolas. Demanding roads, simple accommodation.
• Principe Island: another island, another flight, another rhythm. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Hotels in Sao Tome city and around

Omali Sao Tome

The Omali — also known as Omali Lodge — is the capital's benchmark hotel and the one most travellers arrive at. It has around 30 rooms and suites in low pastel buildings, with tropical gardens, a palm-fringed pool, a gym and a well-regarded restaurant. It sits beside Lagarto Beach, minutes from the airport, which makes it practical for the first and last nights.

One honest note: anyone searching for an "Omali resort" expecting a Caribbean-style beach resort will find something else. It is a comfortable, well-kept urban boutique hotel, but the beaches worth the journey are one to two hours away.

Pestana Sao Tome and Pestana Miramar

The Pestana group runs two properties in the city: the newer Pestana Sao Tome and the Pestana Miramar, the older of the two, colonial in style, with tropical gardens and direct access to the sea. Both are solid choices for travellers who prefer the predictability of a known chain. Sweet Guest House

For budget accommodation that does not sacrifice quality, the Sweet Guest House is the city's most honest answer: a simple, clean guesthouse at friendly prices and reasonably central. No pool, no gardens, but it delivers what it promises — and frees up budget for what actually changes the trip, which is the excursions.

The north: Mucumbli, the jungle hotel

Beyond the town of Neves, Mucumbli is almost a jungle hotel. It is our choice for travellers who want to make this trip without rushing. The bungalows are excellent and the views are beautiful, the kitchen is outstanding, and the surroundings invite walking.

One thing to know before booking: there is no sandy beach. The shore is stony, and reaching it means a long descent and then the climb back — it takes a little adventurous spirit and care. Anyone picturing days on a towel in the sand should choose another base.

Why it is worth sleeping there

On the way north you pass Roca Agostinho Neto and always end up staying longer than planned at Praia dos Tamarindos or Lagoa Azul. Rather than driving all the way back and repeating the same kilometres the next day, you carry on a little further and sleep at Mucumbli.

The next morning you wake up rested and already there, ready to visit the spot where the Portuguese first landed, Roca Diogo Vaz, the Santa Catarina tunnel and a few black-sand beaches. You sleep there again, and that makes two days very well spent in this corner of the island — instead of two days spent driving.

The south: Praia Inhame Eco Resort

Praia Inhame is one of the oldest eco-hotels on Sao Tome and the natural base for the south. It is simple, and we say so plainly: simple bungalows with no air conditioning, and an open-sided restaurant area that can be unpleasant on windy, rainy days. The food is simple too, with a buffet at dinner.

That said, on sunny days it is the best option for anyone heading to Ilheu das Rolas and exploring the south unhurried — Praia Piscina, the Malanza mangrove, the empty beaches that never make the brochures. Travellers looking for hotel comfort should not stay here; travellers looking for the south have no better alternative.

Getting to Inhame is half the trip

Reaching Inhame is an odyssey, because you cross half the island. Rushed, it is a day lost behind the wheel; done properly, it is one of the best days of the trip.

We recommend leaving early, visiting Roca Agua Ize unhurried, stopping at Praia das Sete Ondas and having lunch in Angolares. Then continue slowly, taking in the views: Pico Cao Grande rising out of the forest, and villages forgotten by time such as Monte Mario and Malanza. You arrive in late afternoon, having already seen the island.

Sleeping on a roca

The rocas are former colonial cocoa and coffee plantations, and some have been converted into accommodation. It is the most distinctive experience in the archipelago and has no equivalent anywhere else.

• Roca Sao Joao dos Angolares: in the south, linked to chef Joao Carlos Silva. Worth it as much for the table as for the house.
• Roca Belo Monte (Principe): a restored plantation house set high above the bay, looking out over Praia Banana.
• Roca Sundy (Principe): the plantation where, in 1919, observation of the solar eclipse helped confirm Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

Not every roca offers the same level of comfort, and this is where travellers most often get the choice wrong. Some are charming boutique hotels; others are rustic experiences. It is worth asking before booking.

Principe Island

Principe is a separate decision: it means an internal flight and at least two to three nights to be worthwhile. Accommodation is split between Bom Bom, a simple seaside hotel with its own islet linked by a walkway, and the converted plantations, Belo Monte and Sundy. A note for anyone searching for "Pestana Principe": the Pestana group has no property on Principe Island. The confusion comes from the former Ilheu das Rolas resort, which no longer operates.

How many nights in each region

The distribution we use on our own tours, and which works best in practice:

• 8 days on Sao Tome island: 2 to 3 nights in the city, 1 to 2 nights on a roca, 2 nights in the south for Ilheu das Rolas, and back to the city for the final night.
• Including the north: add 2 nights at Mucumbli, for the reason explained above.
• Including Principe Island: 10 to 11 days in total, with 3 nights on Principe.

Frequently asked questions about accommodation in Sao Tome and Principe

Which is the best hotel in Sao Tome?

For comfort in the city, the Omali and the Pestana Sao Tome are the most consistent choices. But "best" depends on the region: in the south, Praia Inhame is the right base despite being simple, and in the north Mucumbli has no competition. A good trip combines two or three bases rather than repeating the same one.

Are there all-inclusive resorts in Sao Tome and Principe?

Not in the Caribbean sense. There are no large complexes with wristbands and themed restaurants. What exists are boutique hotels, eco-lodges and converted plantations, almost always on a half-board basis. Anyone looking for an all-inclusive resort will be disappointed — and has probably chosen the wrong destination.

Do the hotels have air conditioning?

In the city, yes. Outside it, not always: Praia Inhame, for instance, does not. At altitude and at night the temperature drops enough that you rarely miss it, but it is worth knowing in advance.

Is it worth booking directly with the hotel?

For a night or two in the city, that works. For a full itinerary, no: the best properties have few rooms and sell out months ahead, and without your own 4x4 transport you stay stuck in the city. In Sao Tome, accommodation is the easy part — what decides the trip is the logistics between the stops.

How many nights do you need in Sao Tome and Principe?

Eight days are enough to see Sao Tome island properly, including Ilheu das Rolas. To add the north or Principe Island, count on 10 to 11 days.
