Paje Beach, Zanzibar: The Kitesurfing Paradise on the East Coast

Paje, on Zanzibar's east coast, is today one of the world's kitesurfing capitals. The combination of strong, steady wind, a lagoon protected by the reef and endless white sand has turned this former fishing village into one of the most sought-after destinations for kitesurfers worldwide.

The best season for the northeast kaskazi wind runs from June to October, with strong, consistent gusts ideal for experienced riders. From December to February the kusi wind blows, gentler but still rideable, and the beach gets busier as it coincides with the northern hemisphere's Christmas and New Year holidays. Between November and March, with more irregular wind, Paje also becomes a good base for diving and snorkelling on the nearby reefs.

Along the beach you'll find several certified kitesurf schools (many with IKO instructors), offering lessons for all levels, equipment rental and multi-day intensive courses for complete beginners. No prior experience is needed to start — but even for non-kiters, Paje is worth it for the beach life, the seafront bars and the relaxed atmosphere.

Paje is often compared with neighbouring Jambiani, further south: Paje has a younger, livelier vibe centred on kitesurfing and beach nightlife, while Jambiani is quieter and more family-oriented. Many travellers choose to stay in one and visit the other, since they're only a few kilometres apart.

As along the whole east coast, the tide in Paje rises and falls dramatically, and the lagoon inside the reef has little water at low tide — which is actually part of what makes conditions so safe and predictable for kitesurfing, in a zone sheltered from open-ocean swell.

Accommodation in Paje ranges from simple guesthouses geared towards the kitesurf community to more comfortable boutique resorts, many with direct views over the lagoon and easy access to the kite launch area.

The heavy rainy season (March to May) isn't recommended for kitesurfing or beach time in general, with frequent downpours and less predictable wind.
