What makes São Tomé and Príncipe different

Unlike mass-tourism tropical destinations, the archipelago remains one of the least-visited countries in the world. There are no vast resorts and no crowds on the beaches — there are century-old cocoa plantations, primary forest protected inside Obô Natural Park, and a population of just over 220,000 spread across two islands. Best time to go

The equatorial climate is pleasant all year round, but some seasons are more comfortable than others:

• Gravana (dry season), June to September — the most popular window: less rain, better road conditions and calmer seas.
• Gravanita (short dry season), January and February — a break in the rains and a good alternative outside peak demand.
• Wet season, October to May — the island at its greenest and with fewer visitors, but with frequent rain.

What to pack

Packing for São Tomé is simple, but five things make all the difference:

• Light, breathable clothing — the heat is constant and so is the humidity.
• Walking shoes — several plantations and trails have uneven, slippery ground.
• Insect repellent and sunscreen.
• A light waterproof — even in the gravana it can rain without warning.
• Yellow fever vaccination — recommended and, depending on your country of origin, sometimes required. Always check before travelling.

Pico Cão Grande, a volcanic needle rising above the forest, is the archipelago's most iconic image. Between 1905 and 1911 São Tomé was the world's largest cocoa producer — and the old colonial roças, many now restored as guesthouses or visitor sites, tell that story. São Tomé's coast has volcanic sand and warm water almost all year, from the city beaches of the capital to the hidden coves of the south:

• Praia Jalé — in the far south, a sea turtle nesting site.
• Praia Piscina — natural warm-water pools between the rocks that fill and empty with the tide.
• Lagoa Azul — in the dry north, clear water over volcanic rock.
• Ilhéu das Rolas — crossed by the Equator, one of the few places on earth where you can physically stand on the line, one foot in each hemisphere.

Extending to Príncipe Island

Smaller, wilder and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2012, Príncipe Island is reached only by domestic flight from São Tomé. It is ideal for anyone wanting a few more days of forest, emptier beaches and less tourist infrastructure. It is also where, in 1919, Eddington's team observed the eclipse that confirmed Einstein's theory of relativity.

There is a direct, non-stop flight between Lisbon and São Tomé, operated by TAP Air Portugal and STP Airways, taking around 6h30 with no time difference.
